Remember how many times your mother told you to love the skin you’re in? Well, we know that loving your skin can be hard — even impossible!– in these cold, dry winter months. So to keep your skin happy, we’ve enlisted the help of skin expert and legend Kate Somerville to provide us with a step-by-step guide for achieving gorgeous winter skin. If her name sounds familiar, you’ve most likely seen her self-titled global skincare line sitting on the shelf of your favorite beauty store, or heard her personal clients (like Kate Hudson, Anna Kendrick, and Ruby Rose) rave about her Skin Health Experts clinic on Melrose Place, where she helps them get their glowing complexions. Want your own glow? Scroll down and read her five steps to achieving healthy, radiant skin.
1. Cleanse Properly
Skin can become congested easily (even in the cold months), so it’s really important to cleanse effectively and thoroughly. At my Skin Health Experts™ Clinic on Melrose Place we promote the double cleanse. First use a makeup wipe to remove impurities on the surface. Use both the front and back side of the wipe. Then apply a cleanser (suited for your skin type) to penetrate deeper and fully cleanse skin. You can also use a cleanser twice if you prefer.
2. Exfoliate
Exfoliation is such an important step in maintaining healthy skin, no matter what the weather is! Oils and impurities become trapped under the skin and exfoliation is key. I recommend exfoliating 2-3 times per week.  Look for a gentle exfoliator, like my ExfoliKate, which exfoliates enzymatically to give you that glow.
3. Hydrate
Even if you’re oily, you still need to hydrate (especially in these frigid temperatures). Hydrate topically with serums containing Hyaluronic Acid, which holds 1000x its weight in water. Look for oil-free, lightweight formulas. Incorporate a lightweight serum packed with Hyaluronic Acid (like my DermalQuench Liquid Lift Advanced Wrinkle Treatment) to boost skin’s hydration levels and leave skin smooth and glowing, without clogging pores.
4. Protect
Prevention is the key – and even in January it’s important to wear sunscreen and reapply often. Use a self-tanner to provide an even, healthy looking glow when you can’t go out and tan. I love using my Somerville360 Body Self Tanning Towelettes because they’re quick and super easy to use. Plus, the color looks natural and gorgeous.
5. Moisturize
Seal in hydration with a lightweight moisturizer to prevent water loss. Opt for lightweight, oil-free formulas. Since the air contains so much moisture, a rich formula will make your skin feel weighed down and sticky.
