Have you ever wondered what your friends actually do for work? We’re not talking about the description in their LinkedIn bio, but what they actually do in their 9-5? As part of our mission to bring you more girl boss content, we’re investigating job titles to get the low-down on exactly what they really entail. Curious to know what an account executive even means? Wondering what a VP in finance does in the afternoon? We’re creating more transparency around different jobs, and the salaries and duties that come with them, to help you figure out what you’re interested in. Below, read how a Beauty Account Manager living in NYC spends her workday.
Age: 25
City: NYC
Industry: Public Relations
Job Title: Beauty Account Manager
Years of experience: 3
Salary: 60k
What does your job title actually mean? What does your job entail?
I manage the accounts for major beauty/wellness brands. I handle pitching, events, and makeup artist/influencer relations.
When do you wake up? What’s your morning routine?
I wake up at 6am to go to the gym. Then I come home, get ready, walk my dog, and pack breakfast/lunch for the day.
At 9am I am…
Heading into the office (as long as the lovely NYC subway doesn’t fail me!)
At 11am I am…
Either answering emails, coming back from a breakfast meeting with an editor, influencer or MUA (industry abbrev for makeup artist), on a conference call, pitching new products, or putting together an event deck – every day is different!
What does lunch normally look like for you? Do you have a full lunch or are you lucky to grab a bar in between calls?
Depending on the day I will go grab lunch (salad or stir fry are my go-to) and eat at my desk while answering emails or catching up on The Hollywood Reporter articles. If I bring lunch it’s typically a salad or dinner leftovers. I’ll eat at my desk and then try to step outside for a walk and normally “stumble” into Zara or Topshop.
At 1pm I am…
Probably about to eat or go pick up lunch!
At 3pm I am…
Same as 11am. Depending on the day I’m either sending emails, hopping on a call, pitching new products/my brands, or assembling a deck for an editor or client.
At 5pm I am…
Probably in a meeting. Sometimes by 5 I’ve hit a wall after being glued to my inbox all day so I’ll read the latest from Byrdie, Refinery 29, or Glamour to try to get over the slump and finish the day.
How does a workday end for you? What time do you normally leave work?
I have a dog and can’t always afford a dog walker, so I try to leave as close to 6pm as possible to get back to her for a walk. Before I leave I make sure the major points on my to-do list are finished and no one needs any edits/info/etc from me. I always remind myself not everything can be done in one day and there’s always tomorrow. Then I head to the subway.
What do you do after work? An event? Dinner? More work?
Depending on the day I may have a dinner meeting with an editor or influencer or I’m working or attending an event. Typically I go home for a walk to Riverside Park and catch up on my TV shows. Sometimes I’ll catch dinner and a movie with my boyfriend (shoutout to Movie Pass).
What time do you go to bed? Describe your end of night/bedtime routine.
The night ends with an episode of whatever I’m binge-watching (currently One Tree Hill for the fifth time). Then it’s another walk with my dog and a skincare routine some may call “aggressive.” I try to go to bed around 11-11:30.
Is there anything about your job you’d like people to know?
Every day is different, and PR can be a lot of fun and allow you to be creative, but it’s also a lot of desk work and sitting in front of a computer – it’s not always an episode of The Hills!
