Intern—a mystery-cloaked word we hear constantly throughout college, and in popular culture through hit movies like The Internship and The Intern. While a job requiring getting coffee for everyone in the office and getting paid next to nothing (or, quite literally, nothing), comes to mind, we wanted to explore what it really means to be an intern. We already take you into the morning and nightly routines of successful women, and into the day-to-day jobs of employees across the country. Now, say hello to Intern Diaries. Below, a twenty-four-year-old intern working at a non-profit tells us about her experience.
Age: 24
City your internship took place: Memphis, TN
Industry: Legal
Internship Title: Non-Profit Hospital Legal Intern
Salary: None
Duration: 3 months
What does your internship title mean?
Working with attorneys to address all legal needs of the hospital.
Were you close with any of your team members?
One particular attorney has a PhD in biology and a JD. I am considering going to medical school after I finish law school so I feel that this attorney helped push me to pursue that dream. She even asked me who said I couldn’t do it. I am my only limit.
What were your favorite parts of the role and why?
Interacting with patients and learning about the complexities of the health law industry.
What was your morning routine?
I wake up at 5am every day. I read a few chapters of a book that challenges me or teaches me something while I drink my coffee. I listen to podcasts while I get ready.
What was the most shocking thing that happened during your internship?
Every big situation can be shocking. People will never cease to amaze you with crazy antics that require legal advice.
What did your evening look like after work?
I normally left work at 5pm. Memphis has a lot of options for physical activity so I always exercise on weekdays. Some weekdays I go to a restaurant.
What were the coolest perks of this internship?
The mission of the hospital. Being exposed to experts in numerous fields.
What is the most important thing that you learned in this position?
The patients come first.
Would you work for this company if they offered you a position?
Yes. This company has always been important to me. Working here this summer just solidified my commitment to their mission.
