Maeve Reilly
Hollywood Stylist and eBay Ambassador
-
Dream Job
If you’ve ever tried to dress like Hailey Bieber, you can blame / bless Maeve Reilly. The Hollywood stylist (she / her) also preps Megan Fox and the D’Amelio sisters for their big flashbulb moments, which means basically, all of TikTok needs to know what Maeve’s buying at all times.
“To be honest, a lot of it is from eBay,” says the stylist from her home in Los Angeles. “I’m such a vintage lover. I don’t want what everyone else has. And I love the thrill of finding a designer piece I’ve always wanted.” Her allegiance with the shopping hub is so strong, Maeve’s become an official ambassador, curating online shops for summer and beyond. (She recommends these shoes. We 1000000% agree.)
Here’s how Maeve turns resale pieces into red carpet looks, which designer she wants you to know next, and how she gets her clients to look like bombshells every single time.
Everyone wants your job. How did you become a stylist?
I really worked my way up from the bottom. I started as an intern, and I assisted a lot of other stylists for years. It was 8 years before I even got my own job, and that was because I was styling backup dancers for music videos as an assistant. I started working a lot with a music video director named Colin Tilley, and we were both super young, coming up at the same point in our careers. My big, big break was styling Janelle Monáe, and that happened because Colin was working with her, and working with me, and he trusted me. He knew I would work so hard, and that I knew how to collaborate with huge teams, and stay calm during big, busy days.
What did working with Janelle Monáe teach you about fashion?
I mean, what didn’t it?! [Laughing.] We worked together for 6 years, and it was definitely an amazing journey together. I think she was always considered a fashion icon. She was Prince’s muse! She went from wearing these tailored suits showing zero skin and bow ties all the way to that beautiful sheer Elie Saab couture dress she wore when Moonlight won the Oscar. We had an amazing time together. And Hailey [Bieber] entered my life at that time, as well. So styling backup dancers and then Janelle Monáe, that’s how I got where I am today. Definitely!
Do you use eBay to buy pieces for your clients?
I use eBay for a little bit of everything. I also use it as a verb, like, “eBay it,” because it’s just such a synonymous word for finding pieces that are either not in stores anymore, or rare and vintage… I love finding pieces on there that I can’t find anywhere else. And I feel like they have amazing accessories like bags and watches. Their sneaker collection is incredible… their luxury stuff. One of my first big purchases through eBay was this like really beautiful little gold Rolex that I had my eye on for a really long time. I cannot take it off. I also bought my boyfriend a vintage t-shirt for Christmas. So it’s literally like, a t-shirt and a Rolex. I buy everything there.
You’re a fashion influencer yourself. How do you decide which pieces you’re getting for celebrities and which you’ll keep for yourself?
Well, they definitely get dibs! [Laughing.] The client is always the priority. There have definitely been times when if I love something, I’ll purchase a second piece so Hailey can have it and I can have it. But truthfully, she’s very generous. I often joke about my Hailey hand-me-downs, you know. I will often get a piece after she’s worn it! So I’m very grateful to have a great friend and a friend who loves a lot of the clothes that I love. But I think when you’re working as a stylist, you should never just put the client in what you would wear. You look at the clothes, and you make the best decision based on the clothes, and based on how the women you’re working with wear their clothes… I’ve been doing it so long, I can tell how things will fit just by looking at them. But there’s a lot of trust involved, and a lot of respect for the designers and their pieces, and also for the women you’re working with, and how they love to look. It’s not about “you” at all, you know? It’s really important to me, and I’m sure it’s really important to them, too, that they’re being thought of as individual women. I’m really thinking about each of them. I’m prepping and shopping for them specifically.
Which emerging designer should our readers know about?
LaQuan Smith!
Hailey wore his dress in Paris, right? It was gorgeous.
Yes! We’ve been working with LaQuan Smith for a while… I think he is incredible. I’ve had my eye on his work for years, waiting for the right dress and the right moment. I was just really excited to support him—and as a stylist, it’s so incredible to help people you admire get more exposure and more fame. It’s one of the absolute best parts of my job. I couldn’t be prouder.
