No Sustain No Gain
Welcome to No Sustain, No Gain, where every Monday in April we spotlight a woman who’s giving Mother Earth a break. Because yeah, she really needs it.
Brace for her impact.
Missy Tannen is the co-founder of Boll & Branch, a sustainable bedding brand revolutionizing the way we catch our Zzzs. Not only do her products (which she designs herself, BTW) make your bed look and feel heavenly, but they also give back to the hardworking hands that create them.
Here, the Cincinnati native shares why the right choices aren’t always the easiest, her advice for working with your spouse, and the must-have pieces you need on your bed this spring.
Why bedding?
In 2013, my husband Scott and I treated ourselves to our first king-sized bed, so we went shopping for a new set of sheets. We looked at hundreds of sets and didn’t feel good about any of them—they had no information about who made them and where the materials came from. We couldn’t help but think of a story we’d just seen on the news about a textile factory in Bangladesh that was in such rough shape, it collapsed and killed over 1,000 people. We wondered: Are we contributing to a supply chain that causes this kind of harm? Soon after, we made an (admittedly!) risky decision: We built our own textile company from the ground up, doing right by workers and the planet since Day 1.
Where did the name Boll & Branch come from?
We wanted a name that reflects how both our products and ways of doing things truly are different. We start at the source with 100% organic cotton, which is a soft, delicate fiber that grows in a “boll”—the protective case surrounding the cotton seeds and fibers—and an extension of the supportive “branch.” We’re committed to supporting and protecting organic cotton farmers in the developing world, the same way the boll protects the cottonseed and the branch protects the boll.
What are Boll & Branch’s biggest achievements in terms of sustainability?
Becoming the first-ever Fair Trade Certified bedding company. We ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and that 100% of our product is made from natural, sustainable materials, free from all toxins. We’ve also saved millions of gallons of water by using organic cotton. And by choosing to boat our goods, we’ve saved over 20 metric tons of carbon emissions—the same amount that 4,500 cars emit annually. Even our packaging is made from recycled paper and can be easily repurposed.
What are some of your fav products on the site right now?
Choosing a favorite is very difficult, but on my bed right now is our Signature Hemmed Sheet Set in white, our Waffle Blanket in white, and our Signature Colorblock Duvet Cover in white / pewter. There’s nothing better than the softness and comfort of our Signature Fabric—it symbolizes what a dream of making beautiful and ethical products can mean for the world.
Finally, we gotta ask: What advice would you give women who work with their partners?
Make sure your roles don’t overlap. I feel like my own entrepreneur when designing and making our products. I feel empowered to make my own decisions, and my husband completely supports my area of strength. And likewise, I do not have a background in business operations, so he is an entrepreneur in his own world. We work so well by staying in our own lanes, but completely trusting one another.
