Today I Will...

HAVE A SLUMBER PARTY WITH VERONICA.
We wanted to note that we still stand in solidarity with the writers/actors on strike and in their fight to address and win what they need, just as the DGA did in their negotiations.
The Hangover, but make it kid-friendly. That’s how we would describe Disney’s latest coming-of-age film The Slumber Party. Directed by Veronica Rodriguez (she/her), the movie follows teens Megan, Paige, Anna Maria, and Veronica after a b-day party goes terribly wrong, like—the girls wake up with absolutely no memory of the night before thanks to a certain hypnotist—wrong. We’re talking: an onion eating contest, racing down a huge hill on a giant hedgehog float, and even baby ducks. “It’s filled with girl power, lots of comedy, an amazing soundtrack, true friendship, and a ton of nostalgia,” Veronica says. And TBH, we’re loving nostalgia atm.
Speaking of nostalgia, do you remember those magazine quizzes you took with your childhood besties? Well, we made our own just for you. (Adult version, ofc.) Before we get to that, let’s learn a little more about Veronica and her work below.
How long have you been working in the entertainment industry?
I’ve been working in the entertainment industry since 2015, but always felt drawn to movies when I was young, especially seeing them on the big screen as they continuously inspired me. I got involved in filmmaking my senior year of college at Santa Clara University where I learned that screenwriting was an actual career, and also where I directed my first short film. Now, I’m passionate about girl power and showcasing underrepresented and diverse voices in my creative work.
Did you learn something new or about yourself from this project?
I was reminded of how exciting being 14 is, and how everything is just momentous during that time. And of course, friendships—friends when you’re that age are everything, too. I loved being able to work on a film that I know my 14-year-old self would’ve loved and that my daughter, when she’s 14, will also love.
Aw! Do you have any recs for a slumber party nowadays?
My sleepovers were never really about beauty, or anything like that. My must-haves were: an epic snack area, lots of comfy blankets, a perfect playlist to set the tone, and a special movie to watch.
