Native Narratives

Happy Native American Heritage Month! Every week in November, we’ll be chatting with Indigenous and Native individuals to talk about culture, career, and everything in between.
Girl, put Raye’s records on. Singer-songwriter Raye Zaragoza (she/her) is a force to be reckoned with in the folk scene. Informed by her identity as a woman of mixed Indigenous, Asian, and Latina heritage, she’s written an array of music from tunes for Netflix’s Spirit Rangers—a kids’ show featuring an all Native American writers room + cast—to a song about the Dakota Access Pipeline protest. And starting next month, she’ll be taking the stage as Tiger Lily in Peter Pan. “I’m so excited to be playing this newly imagined version of Tiger Lily because not only is it an amazing opportunity, but it’s also a big responsibility to recreate a character that’s both beloved and in much need of change,” she says.
Here, Raye talks about her latest album, going back to theater, and ofc, blessed us with a personalized playlist.
What was the inspiration behind Hold That Spirit?
Hold That Spirit was written when I truly needed healing. It was created the year I was 29—the year I got engaged, the year the engagement fell apart, the year I finally sought help to heal from disordered eating, and the year I gloriously entered my thirties. This album was the inner voice that kept me going through the emotional turmoil during that time. These songs are the “Aha!” moments. It feels so good to be on the other side, sharing these songs with the world. I just hope people feel that they’re not alone in their difficult seasons when they listen to it.
Opening night is right around the corner! How are you feeling?
It’s been nice to revisit my musical theater roots and explore this side of my creativity. I’m excited for everyone to see this telling of Peter Pan because it’s one of those shows where everyone will see themselves reflected on stage. And it’s just such a fun show!
You’ve also made us a really cool mix. What can we expect from these tracks?
I listen to this playlist when I’m chilling out and/or need to feel all the feelings. I’ve included my favorite artists from the last few years, too. Honestly, these songs have gotten me through some low moments and also been the soundtrack to some of the best memories. It reflects where I’m at in life right now, which is all about going inward and grounding (and adventuring, of course).
We have to ask: Which artist do you think should take the spotlight next?
Aysanabee! All of his songs will be hits very soon. I love Somebody Else so much!
