You already know big names like SZA, H.E.R., and Jhené Aiko, and soon, you’ll know Fana Hues (she/her). The R&B/Neo Soul artist from Cali rose to stardom in 2021 after being featured on Tyler, the Creator’s Grammy award-winning album, Call Me If You Get Lost. The following year, The Guardian said she’d be the one to watch. (Which we totally have been ever since.)

Today, she has not one, not two, but three albums out, with Moth being the latest in her dynamic discography. Her summer single Rental off the recent record is cool, chic, and all about having a good time. “It’s about freedom and fun, nothing too complex,” she says. But as for her personal taste in music (and mixes)—it simply depends on the day. “I usually don’t like listening to just one type of song or genre. My playlists might feel random, but I enjoy taking a journey through different styles and moods.”

Speaking of journeys, Fana’s been forming her own ever since she could remember. “I’ve always wanted to be an artist, and I’m fortunate to have a label that doesn’t control my creativity,” she says. “I create without limitations, and every day, someone new discovers my music, allowing me to make a living doing what I love.”

To honor herself and other leading powerhouses in the music industry, she curated a playlist to showcase that. And as for who she thinks we should keep our eyes (and ears) on next? “This is a tough one, but Ravyn Lenae and Amaarae are incredibly talented and deserve more recognition,” she says. Good thing they’re in the lineup below.
