Catching up with Miranda Kerr (she/her) is always a treat. The supermodel turned CEO has brought certified organic goodness to skincare with KORA Organics for over a decade now, and she’s not stopping anytime soon (thankfully). “At KORA, we are focusing on continuing to cement our position as a leader in skincare, developing new innovative products, and pushing the boundaries in the certified organic space,” she says. From her days on the runway to leading a beauty brand, Miranda shares her holistic approach to wellness and beauty with me. (As well as spilling the tea on her latest launch. 🍵)

What’s the story behind KORA Organics?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about health and wellness. I grew up in a health conscious family in the Australian countryside so I have a strong connection to nature and an appreciation for its healing properties. Using clean and certified organic products became especially important to me when I was a teenager and my mom was diagnosed with cancerous tumors in her spleen. Our family started to do further research and learned that a lot of the everyday products we were using in our lives, from household cleaning products to packaged food items to skincare, contained chemicals that can be harmful to our health. We were shocked to see how unhealthy certain ingredients can be that were readily available on the market and deemed safe—even stuff that claimed to be natural really weren’t! I learned so much from this experience, and it was definitely a turning point in my life when I was encouraged to embrace the importance of caring for my body from a holistic point of view. This is what sparked my interest in certified organic products and inspired me to launch KORA Organics.

Transitioning from supermodel to CEO involves a steep learning curve. What have been the most valuable lessons you’ve learned about leading and growing a biz in the competitive beauty industry?
I was fortunate throughout my years of modeling to work closely with leading global corporations, where I had exposure to CEOs, various executives, and respected creatives. It was a constant learning path that provided me with many skills and tools that I’ve applied with KORA. Modeling prepared me for my role as an entrepreneur because it helped me understand business, how to connect with an audience, and communicate with the customer. This makes all the difference in how a brand reaches consumers and stands out in a competitive industry.

You often speak about the connection between wellness and beauty. How does this philosophy reflect in your products?
Our philosophy at KORA is to feed your mind with positive affirmations and self-love, feed your body with the nutrients it needs to function at its best, and feed your skin with products to help detoxify, nourish, and revitalize. One of our key considerations when first developing KORA was to create products that form part of a self-care experience and inspire a skincare ritual that encourages you to take a moment out of your day to nurture yourself which is where the aromatherapy, crystal energy, and affirmations come in.

We have created a unique infusion process where we filter our products through rose quartz crystals. Rose quartz is a soft-pink colored gemstone that carries a very gentle, soothing energy to encourage self-love, self-esteem, and forgiveness. We also use essential oils instead of synthetic fragrance. I love using aromatherapy, to either help lift my spirits or create a nurturing atmosphere, so every single product has its own blend of essential oils for both skin and sensory benefits.

Of all the items in the KORA Organics line, do you have a personal fave?
I put my heart and soul into each of them, but if I had to choose one product it would be our Turmeric Brightening Pore Scrub + Exfoliating Mask. We created 17 samples of this product until it was right! I’m obsessed with exfoliating and face masks, and this product is like an at-home facial in a tube as it brightens, deeply cleanses, reduces inflammation, and evens skin tone. It’s one of our cult-favorites that everyone is obsessed with.

And last but not least… Tell me about your latest launch!
We recently dropped our most requested product yet, our Silky Sun Drops Organic Sunscreen Serum with SPF 30 for Skin Barrier Repair which has been five years in the making. Growing up under the harsh Australian sun, I was educated from a young age about the importance of sun protection and the role sunscreen plays in protecting our skin against harmful UVA/UVB rays, so developing a high performance sunscreen has always been high on my agenda. It’s been a huge undertaking to ensure it not only complied with the strict standards set by COSMOS/Ecocert, but that it also lived up to my high expectations of hydration, texture, protection, and no white cast.
