WAKE UP WITH NAVIA.

Navia Robinson (she/her) has graced our television screens for years. The actress is most known for her role in Raven’s Home, a spin-off of That’s So Raven and her starring role in the CW’s Gotham Knights. As her father began to grow his movie collection once Blockbuster stores began shutting their doors, Navia learned the importance of films and discovered that she herself wanted to be on TV one day. “When I told my parents I wanted to ‘be on TV,’ I felt completely justified and they, particularly my mom, took me seriously,” she says. “I feel very grateful that she did.” We caught up with the actress on what her day-to-day looks like and how she manages to get it all done.

(This interview was done prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The Newsette supports the actors and writers who are currently on strike.)

What’s the first thing you do out of bed?
The very first thing I do is brush my teeth! Then I make my bed, and take care of all of the little tasks I can complete before I have to use my phone. When you unlock your phone you let the whole world in, so I try to allow as much time to myself and my own thoughts and mind as possible—that is, until the construction site across the street begins its work every morning. Once I know their day has begun I realize I should probably get mine started, too.

What’s your morning routine like? What products do you use?
I finally feel like I have the right skincare routine for my face and am enthusiastic everytime I get to share it! I do the heavy lifting at night. I cleanse my face with Juno & Co’s Clean 10 Cleansing Balm followed by CeraVe’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser (if needed). I then use Mad Hippie’s Vitamin C Serum and immediately moisturize afterwards using Dieux’s Instant Angel Face Cream (which feels like a sedative for my sensitive skin). Lastly, I use Tretinoin 0.05 which was prescribed to me and my ephemeral acne (it’s infrequent, but when it shows up it packs a punch). In the morning, I cleanse my face with warm water and then use Supergoop sunscreen. If I’m lucky, I have enough time to use Mount Lai’s Calming Herbal Repair Balm and this Gua Sha sculpting tool. Those mornings are my favorite!

What do you usually make for breakfast?
I’m usually making some iteration of a meal with eggs, bread, and tomatoes and maybe some mushrooms and onions provided I have time. I love yogurt with granola—there’s this great almond butter granola from Trader Joes. Berries are my crutch when I’m in a rush! Also, I love smoothies. I will throw nearly anything into a blender and call it breakfast.

Do you have a go-to outfit?
I get all dressed up as the day calls for it, but according to my friends I’m usually wearing what they’ve deemed “autumn colors.” I love clothes! I’m most inspired by fashion of the ‘60s and ‘70s, so that love may subconsciously make its way into how I dress and buy clothes. These days, most things I wear are secondhand, so what I put on feels like it has its own soul. That said, I am not immune to the whims of today’s fashion. After all, I am a child of the 2010s who can’t stop wearing Dr. Martens.

What time do you start work?
I never get to choose! But I like the unpredictability that comes with being an actress.

Is there anything else that you do in the mornings that helps you get ready for your day?
I make tea like it’s an obligation and am ideally always nursing a cup.
