Meet and Greet
The road to hell is paved with good Cruel Intentions, which is exactly how we felt after watching the ‘90s cult classic for the first time. (And again after the trailer for the upcoming TV show dropped.) In our opinion, the next generation deserves its own messy set of stepsiblings that know exactly how to push each other’s buttons. Starring in the series is actress Brooke Lena Johnson (she/her), who had a ton to say about filming the wicked franchise below.
After a few tries, we’re finally getting a Cruel Intentions TV show. What was it like to be a part of a long-awaited retelling of a classic (albeit controversial) movie?
The creators and writers of this series have absolutely killed it. Sara [Goodman] and Phoebe [Fisher]’s vision was so strong—it was such an honor to bring it to life. The reimagining is going to have what every old and new fan craves. It’s a character-based series packed with all the dark, raunchy, and taboo-filled scenarios that you can sink your teeth into! We’re placed in the prestigious world of upper class, rich, and power hungry 20-somethings on campus. So, you really get to see what wild things people will do to get where they want.
Where does your character fit into the chaotic world of Greek life and too-close-for-comfort stepsiblings?
She’s a fighter for sure! She definitely has some dark ways to get what she wants, but she makes it a struggle for the other characters to get what they want, too. She listens to what she thinks is the truth and won’t back down without saying so. Anyone who has been on the outside will most definitely relate to her and the struggle of belonging in a world that doesn’t accept you. She’s strong, but you’ll see moments of her vulnerability peak through.
What other messy shows or movies do you secretly (or not-so-secretly) love?
I love a good messy show. I don’t think I keep any a secret as everyone knows I like to watch the chaos go down [laughing]. I can’t wait for the next season of Beef, it’s such a great show! And then there’s The Bear, which just can’t be beat. Talk about a phenomenal cast and killer soundtrack along with it!
Are there any easter eggs that fans of the OG film should look out for?
I think everyone will appreciate that Sean Patrick Thomas is back with us in a new role as a professor—we’re so lucky to work with him! There are a few other nods in there as well. Wink wink!
Do you have any other projects that you can’t wait for people to see?
I have one coming out next year, The Strangers: Chapter 2. If you’ve seen the first film, be on the lookout for this one as we dive into the backstory of characters from the original that will truly haunt you.
