Nina Davuluri and Rooshy Roy are the co-founders of aavrani, the premium skincare brand inspired by ancient Indian beauty rituals. Before co-founding the beauty company, Nina was Miss America, and also has experience being a television host, speaker, and advocate. She is the Chief Brand Officer at aavrani, and also loves to travel–she’s been to 44/50 states. Rooshy is the CEO of the all-natural company, and is simultaneously pursuing her MBA at Wharton Business School (graduating in May). Talk about impressive. Before being a CEO, she worked in finance, and shares that “the frenetic lifestyle gave me an appreciation for health & wellness, which was a huge inspiration behind the aavrani brand!” We asked these entrepreneurs to describe what they do after a busy day of work. They share their nightly routines below.
6:30 P.M.
RR: This is typically the time I like to revisit my task list. With things popping up throughout the day and most meetings / calls / projects taking longer than expected, it helps to reorient myself by taking a step back to review what got accomplished and decide what needs to get done before going to bed at night. This helps me stay (somewhat) organized amid the chaos.
ND: Spin class! I love any and all forms of spinning, and have tried nearly every studio in Manhattan. However, one of my favorites is Monster Cycle. You spin to music videos and they have themed rides throughout the week! Getting your workout while watching Beyoncé and Cardi B videos is definitely some fun motivation!
7:00 P.M.
RR: Exercise! I am not at all a morning person, so I’ve been blocking off an hour a day in the evening to re-charge and clear my head. Upbeat music is critical. Lately, I’ve been loving Pure Barre. It’s high energy, engaging, and the 50 mins flies by.
ND: I love to cook! And I’ve also found that cooking actually helps me unwind after a busy day. I try to follow a plant-based diet as much as possible, and love creating new recipes. My mom is a fantastic cook, and I’ve learned quite a few recipes from her. My new thing lately has been trying to create new Indian style fusion dishes that are vegan friendly–one that I’m loving lately is a veggie pizza with a tomato-based “tikka” sauce and a cauliflower crust!
8 P.M.
RR: Depending on how much work I have left, I either whip up a quick, high-protein meal (often some combo of salmon, quinoa, and eggs), or grab Sweetgreen on the way home from barre. The Harvest Bowl is my usual go-to, but recently I’ve been loving the new buffalo chicken salad.
ND: I usually check in on social media channels. Being CBO, I always keep my pulse on what’s going on in the beauty industry. The creative side never turns off, but I set this time aside to actively put my thoughts on paper from throughout the day and build out new campaign ideas and creative content.
8:30 P.M.
RR: The block of “me-time” continues with a shower and my nightly personal care / skincare routine. This is my favorite part of the day and has quite frankly become the escape ritual that I find myself looking forward to! Products that have become staples in my routine include: a dry brush for gentle exfoliation pre-shower, a scalp head massager (mine is by Vanity Planet from Amazon – leaves my hair squeaky clean and it’s ultra-relaxing), the aavrani glow activating exfoliator (as a mask at least 3x per week – brightens, resurfaces and evens skin tone), and pure rose hip seed oil to lather on my face and neck after moisturizing (it preserves the glow from the mask and I wake up with reliably supple and plump skin).
9 P.M.
RR: Back to work! Since I usually wrap up work in my apartment, I enjoy lighting a candle and making a turmeric ginger tea (hooked on the Trader Joe’s one at the moment) to help me wind down and relax as I tick through final emails and to-dos.
ND: Dobby’s (my rescue pup’s) nighttime stroll. I usually catch up with friends or family during this time or listen to a podcast. After I get back, I revisit my morning checklist, catch up on those last emails and prioritize what I need to do for the next day’s work or event. I also choose my outfits and make sure I pack my work bag (or suitcase if I’m traveling), for the next day.
9:30 P.M.
ND: My favorite time of the day: self-care time! After showering and getting into my comfy pjs and slippers, I try to take 10 minutes to myself for my skincare routine starting. I always start with the 4 step aavrani ritual. There are certainly days where 10 minutes shortens to 5 or sometimes even just slopping on some moisturizer, but I never skip at least that! And I always wash my makeup off. It’s come to a point where I can’t sleep if I don’t!
Time you go to bed:
RR: Still a work-in-progress on this one, but trying to go lights-out by 1am. I’m such a night owl, so this transition has been in the works for nearly a year. Meditative sleep stories via the Calm app have been incredibly helpful – they get me to relax quickly and get better quality sleep.
ND: I try to go to bed around 10:30pm, but it usually ends up being closer to 11:30pm (there’s always one more email to send!). I also made it my resolution to read a few chapters of motivational books before bed this year to try and unplug earlier, and so far I’ve really been enjoying that! I’m currently reading “The Courage to be Disliked.”
