Binge-ness as Usual

To all the boys we’ve loved before: We love this gal even more.
Lana Condor (she / her) is the actress behind our favorite rom-coms, and tomorrow, she’s blessing us with Moonshot, her newest release, on HBO Max. Also featuring Cole Sprouse, the futuristic film is about two college students who sneak onto a space shuttle going to Mars.
Here, the 24-year-old shares how she ruined Cole’s favorite jeans, what excites her most about her next movie, and why Lara Jean would be the ultimate wedding planner.
So, if you had the chance to go to Mars in real life, would you?
It depends on what stage of space exploration we’re in. Like, is this the first flight to Mars? Or is traveling to Mars now commercialized? If it’s for exploration, Lana Condor has no business going to Mars before the scientists or the super-smart people who could do great things for society. But if space travel were a common thing, I absolutely would—if I could come back.
Cole Sprouse is a pretty funny guy. Was it hard to stay in character while working with him?
It really was. I wish I was one of those actors who just never breaks character, but I’ll often be so locked into what my co-star is saying that I can’t help but find them funny. Cole is so comically gifted that it was such a joy to work with him, but also ridiculously frustrating because I could not keep from laughing. It got to the point where one of the producers came up to me and was like, “Lana, you need to go home!”
What’s your most memorable story from set?
There was one time when Cole was very unhappy with me because the night before, I threw a little party and secretly put packets of jam into people’s pockets. I don’t know why [laughing]. Then he came to work the next day and was like, “Lana… guess what happened? It seems like jam exploded in my pockets and ruined my favorite jeans.” He was not thrilled with it, but I thought it was hilarious.
We heard Noah Centineo was shooting on a nearby set. Did you guys hang out?
Yes, he was shooting Black Adam in Atlanta while we were filming, which was really nice because we’d hang out on the weekends and had a little group of friends out there. Also, after spending hundreds of hours with him on To All the Boys, it was nice to form a friendship with him that’s different from our working relationship.
You’re also going to star in the new Looney Tunes movie. What are you most excited about?
I’m in a place in my career where I want to be part of projects that are fun and uplifting but will also teach me a new skill. Most of Moonshot was made with a green screen, which I hadn’t done prior, so I wanted to hone in on that and add it to my tool belt. It’s very similar to the Looney Tunes film because it’ll have humans mixed with cartoons, and I’ve never worked in that space before. I’m innately curious, so I want to know what it’s like to act with nothing or act with puppeteers.
And you recently got engaged! Would you let Lara Jean be your wedding planner?
Oh, absolutely! Lara Jean is the ultimate lover of romance. Love is her essence. So I feel like she would plan the best, most beautiful wedding. Also, she planned Trina’s wedding in the third movie and it was stunning.
Is there a specific food you want at your wedding?
Oh my God, I think about that constantly! My dream is to have 4 food trucks, ‘cause food is very much a passion of mine and I think it’d be amazing to have different cuisines. Like Italian, poke or sushi, tacos, and other soul food.
You have an amazing fashion sense. Did you have any style icons growing up?
I think I was in 7th or 8th grade when Blake Lively was on the cover of Vogue’s September issue, and she was wearing the most stunning gold dress. She looked like a goddess—so strong and confident. I fell in love with that cover. I’d carry it around everywhere and keep it by my bedside. Since then, I started tracking her outfits and specifically her Met choices because she always looked regal, and I think that reflects in her personality, too. I would love to have that vibe, but I’m also very much in love with my matching sweatsuits [laughing]. Even though we’re coming out of the pandemic, I will not let them go!
