“It’s all about growth, baby!” says Annalisa Cochrane (she / her), who plays lead character Addy in Peacock’s new series, One Of Us Is Lying. (It’s based on a thriller novel, BTW, not the ABBA song.) The show follows 4 high school students suspected of murdering a classmate during detention, so it’s like PLL meets The Breakfast Club and we’re here for it.
We called the 25-year-old to learn how she gets camera-ready skin, why she walks the talk, and why being part of the popular crowd is so overrated.
5 P.M. Filming takes a lot of discipline, so it’s important to settle into calm when I get home. I love a long walk, so I’ve been challenging myself to walk for 30 minutes in the morning and at night without distractions; I just take in my surroundings and smile at people because it makes me feel better. I try to add an educational component to my day, so a few days a week I’ll [listen to] a podcast. I’ve been loving The Huberman Lab; he’s this science-based man who gives such good advice. Sometimes my roommates will join [the walk] and it’s a nice time to catch up. I’ve noticed everything in life is better when I have people to do it with. You’re not going to grow without solitude, but you’re also not going to grow without community.
5:45 P.M. If I have a lot of makeup on, I do a cleansing oil. Then I’ve been loving Youth to the People’s superfood cleanser, and I love REN’s brightening toner, so I’ll do that before The Ordinary’s niacinamide, which is so helpful for my skin. Then maybe a little caffeine solution for under the eyes, and I always do KraveBeauty’s hyaluronic acid. I tend to have pretty oily skin, so I’ll follow it up with a water-based moisturizer or something light.
6 P.M. I make dinner and try to set the mood. I’m trying to be mindful about the cooking and eating environment I’m in because I think you gain so much pleasure from the little moments. [My roommates and I] have a fun Italian cooking playlist, so we turn it on and light some candles. I’m such a fan of getting salmon and throwing it in the oven with some veggies, olive oil, salt, and pepper. When I’m filming, I try not to drink during the week because I don’t want my face to be puffy the following day.
7 P.M. We’ll eat at the dining table, talk, then move to the living room to watch TV. My parents didn’t raise me with a lot of classic films, so I’ve been trying to get my roommates to watch those, but sometimes I just want mindless entertainment. I definitely watch people’s acting a lot, especially after working so much, it’s hard to just get lost in the story. That’s when I know it’s a really good story, when I’m fully lost. And I’ve been really interested in filmmaking, so I watch the different shot angles, transitions, zooms, and lighting.
8 P.M. If I’m filming, I rehearse lines. This [show] totally fell into my lap, but it ticked all the boxes. I love a good screaming, running through the woods, but I also want to have the emotional, quiet moments. I feel like I lucked out because Addy’s journey is so rich. I [related] to the feelings of not being good enough, lack of self-worth and insecurity, and how she leaves it all behind to step into who she is. Also taking a page from her book, like, “Stop caring what people think. Find your tribe and let those people let you soar.” You don’t need the popular group of friends, the hot boyfriend… That’s not going to give you fulfillment in the long run.
9:30 P.M. I move into my room and stretch. I used to follow videos, but I feel like I’ve done enough yoga and pilates that I can just be mindful of my body and do my own routine. I also love to take 5 minutes to reflect on the day. I write down what I’m grateful for, what went well, what I could’ve done better, [and] my to-do list for the next day.
10 P.M. I like to turn my phone off and read a good book before bed. Right now I’m reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. I love it because it’s so story-based, so he’ll tell a story and you’re like, “I’m falling asleep.” I’ve [found] that if you sleep on what you just learned, your memory is so much better. Sometimes I do a little meditation 10 minutes before bed. I use Insight Timer, which gives you different teachers and practices. Sometimes I want a loving or kindness meditation and other times I want something that reminds me to focus on my breath. I’ll hopefully be asleep by 11:00 so I can wake up by 7:00.
