Age: 31
City: San Francisco, CA
Industry: Gaming/Tech
Job Title: Social Impact Manager
Years of Experience: 9
Salary: $131k

What does your job title mean?
I lead the social impact efforts, which means that I spend my time finding ways for our company to give back to communities through the three things that matter most to us – exercise, exploration, and social interaction. We build AR apps, so we try to find ways to use our tech for good both on a local and global level. Our efforts include community events, educational programs, and initiatives focused on sustainability, and physical/mental health.

When do you wake up?
Because I have a 2-year-old, my mornings can get crazy. To maintain my own sanity, I wake up between 5am and 5:30am, and enjoy a hot coffee while getting some work done before my daughter wakes up. Once she’s up around 6:30am, we make breakfast, negotiate her clothing for the day (!!), take the dogs for a walk, and try to get the house in order before leaving.

At 9am I am…
Running to catch the train after dropping my daughter off. Most of the time, I take calls with community partners or play one of our games on the way to the train. Because I use the underground train, there’s no cell service during my commute, so I use the time to listen to podcasts or music and get my mind ready for the work day.

At 11am I am…
Usually either in meetings with partners, or working on a project. I try to keep my meetings to a max of 3 per day, and they’re often with city leaders, nonprofits, or existing partners who want to check in on various programs. I use the “max 3” rule with my to-do list as well, so if I’m not in a meeting, I’m working on one of the 3 things I must do that day. I don’t allow myself to do anything else until those 3 things are done!

What does lunch normally look like for you?
We’re lucky enough to have lunch delivered to our office, so I never have an excuse to skip it. Sometimes, I sit in our kitchen with colleagues, and other times I take it outside or to my desk for “quiet time.” I’m both an introvert and extrovert, so if I’ve had partner meetings all morning, I need alone time to recharge and lunch time is a great break point.

At 1pm I am…
I usually try to reserve this time for new partner calls, or with organizations who I am just starting to get to know. I’m at my freshest and most prepared, so it’s a good time for me to be on my A-game. If I don’t have a call, I try to use the 1pm mark as “go time” after lunch to attack my to-do list. I usually have headphones on to keep distractions at a minimum in our open space office.

At 3pm I am…
Interviewing new candidates. Our company is growing very quickly, so more times than not, I have at least 1 interview per day. 3pm is a sleepier time for me normally, so I like to spend my time getting to know candidates, answering questions, and finishing up any needs for the day. 3pm is also the time that I reassess my list and figure out if I missed doing anything for the day.

At 5pm I am…
Running back to pick up my daughter! The train commute is unpredictable, so I try to be out of the office by 5pm. I like to read or listen to music on the way home to switch my “work brain” to “mom brain.” That way, I’m ready to engage with my daughter when I get to her daycare.
How does a workday end for you?

Workdays often end with last-minute meetings with colleagues, or in an attempt to finish up what’s on my list. Once in a while, we have a late scheduled meeting, in which case I arrange for my husband or a friend to pick my daughter up. It’s important for me to get time with my daughter since she goes to bed so early, and I like to break up my work day for better productivity.

What do you do after work?
I’m normally at home with my daughter after work, but if I’m not, I’m catching up with friends or attending an industry event. Keeping in touch with my closest friends is one of my biggest forms of therapy and I have to make time for that! Once I’m home and my daughter is in bed, I hit the laptop again and catch up on things I’m behind on. I try to shut it down by 9:30pm and squeeze in a quick workout or time to read.

What do you do before bed?
I go to bed by 10:30pm since I wake up so early! I need at least 15 minutes before bed to properly wind down, so I go through my same face cleansing routine, take vitamins, and spray some lavender around the house. I’ve also started using the mindfulness app, Headspace, and it’s a great way to get in some meditation before bed.

Is there anything about your job you’d like people to know?
Even though I’ve been at Niantic for over 7 years, I created my current role last year and it was a complete switch from the marketing role I had before. I focused on creating a role that gives me energy and that I love doing, and doing that has changed my life in so many good ways.
