Alex Aster is the managing editor of The Newsette, and, as a part of our new “Ask Alex” series, she tackles some of our readers’ most pressing questions, in an effort to bring a new perspective to the table. Today, Alex answers a question about breakfast.
Q: Dear Alex, this is a simple, but important question. What the heck should I eat for breakfast?? I work a busy job in the city, and always find myself at my desk at 9am starving. I feel like I don’t have time to make anything substantial, and it is effecting not only my body, but also my efficiency in the morning. By the time lunch rolls around, I’m starving! What’s a quick, easy, and filling breakfast I can bring on-the-go?
A: I have to admit I was excited to receive this question—I am a breakfast fanatic. All of my favorite foods are breakfast foods, and I’ve been known to have eggs/bacon/toast for dinner…
Breakfast in the morning before a busy job is a completely different story, though. You don’t have time to finish your mascara, let alone make an omelette. The good news? I’ve got you covered. Every weekday morning, I make the same thing. A delicious, healthy smoothie that literally tastes like a milkshake, and takes three minutes to prepare. Here’s the recipe:

  1. Half a cup of almond milk
  2. Half a frozen banana (it doesn’t have to be frozen, but it makes the smoothie so much creamier!)
  3. A tablespoon of almond butter
  4. A tablespoon of cacao powder
  5. A tablespoon of protein (optional, I use vegan vanilla)
  6. 3 ice cubes

Mix until smooth, and you’ve got yourself the perfect weekday breakfast! If you want to enjoy on the go, simply pour it into a plastic cup, or a thermos that will keep it cold. I love these (and so does Oprah!). Enjoy!
