Seira Wilson knows how to read a room. As the Senior Editor of Amazon Books, she spends her time interviewing authors and organizing live events, and her extensive literary knowledge might upstage Hermione Granger’s. (Sacrilege? Perhaps…) While Seira specializes in cookbooks and the Young Adult genre for work, she describes her personal reading taste as a little more lawless: “If there’s a nonfiction book about spies or the criminal underworld, I’m in.” Between her job, family, and two dogs, Seira’s schedule is pretty booked. Here’s how she makes it all work.

What are some bad habits that you’ve cut out of your daily routine?
1. Watching TV in bed.
2. Afternoon vending machine visits–I try to keep a piece of fruit or raisins at my desk instead of going for that 2 P.M. candy bar.
3. Email notifications on my computer. It’s way too distracting, and I get more done when I can focus on a task and not go down the email rabbit hole all day.

What are good habits you’ve added?
1. Water! A friend gave me a 16oz reusable cup with a straw that I love.
2. Bringing my little Boston Terrier, Beulah, to work.
3. Desk exercise.

How do you keep yourself balanced?
If I start feeling really stressed or overwhelmed during the day, I’ll take a deep breath, step away from my computer and have a non-work related chat with colleagues. I’m lucky enough to get to work with really funny and delightful people, and that old adage about laughter being the best medicine? 100% true for me.

Are there any activities you do to help you de-stress?
For maximum relaxation, I try to get away on the weekends. I have a little cabin in the woods in Eastern Washington, and I go there with my family almost every weekend to eat, read, and just be in nature. During the week when I need to de-stress, I go straight for the bathtub. Total peace and quiet, a scented bath bomb, and a book. It’s always rejuvenating for me.

How many hours of sleep do you get a night?
I usually get 6-7 hours a night, but I’m best with a full 8. If I could keep the dog out of the bed, that would probably help–she is only 12 pounds, but she snores like a freight train! I’m kind of a pushover with her, so it’s a work in progress…
Do you have a favorite wellness trend?
Meditation and hypnosis. It helps that my husband is a hypnotherapist (LOL!) but I’ve always been interested in it. When I have a big meeting or author interview coming up and I start to feel anxious, I calm myself down by listening to an audio hypnosis session on my headphones beforehand.

What is your favorite healthy food?
I love fruit. Any and all kinds depending on what’s in season. In the winter you’ll find citrus on my desk and in the fruit basket at home, and in the summer it’s berries galore. I review cookbooks as part of my job, so I’m always testing out new recipes that incorporate the fruit of the season.
