A Serial Entrepreneur's Mesmerizing Morning Beauty Routine

Alexandra Wilkis Wilson is one of those people that is always busy — even when she’s relaxing. And that’s just how she likes it. A serial entrepreneur, Alexandra has co-founded 3 startups over the past 10 years: Gilt (which sold to Hudson’s Bay in 2016), GLAMSQUAD, and most recently Fitz (which just sold to Tradesy). Talk about a phenom. In addition to founding her outrageously successful companies, Alexandra has also been involved as an advisor or angel investor in over 50 digital startups, most of them founded and/or led by women. As if she wasn’t busy enough, Alexandra has also just recently taken on a new role as SVP of Consumer Strategy and Innovation at Allergan, where she is in the process of building 3 startups in the beauty space. Beyond being a business mogul, Alexandra is a mother of two, a wife, a lover of travel, romance languages and literatures, as well as a serial Netflix binge-watcher. She’s also a born-and-bred New Yorker. Beyond curious about how this insanely busy boss starts her day? She breaks it all down below.
6:15 A.M. My husband is in finance and works on a trading floor. Both of our alarms usually go off at 6:15 A.M. He needs to jump out of bed then, but I sometimes can hit snooze, or else I often start my daily love affair with my iPhone X to see if I have any pressing texts or emails.
6:30 A.M. Some mornings when I have important meetings or events, I will book a GLAMSQUAD hairstylist to blow out my hair after I shower. While getting an early morning blowout, I typically multitask furiously. I catch up on emails on my laptop, take my 20 or so vitamins with water, sip a skim cappuccino and eat a healthy small serving of cereal that I buy from Dr. Jairo Rodriguez. While I am doing this, my daughter is often in my lap or standing by my side giving me her two cents on my hairdo, while my son is typically re-enacting a Harry Potter or Star Wars scene a few feet away.
On non-GLAMSQUAD mornings, I try and exercise on my Peloton or at a class. I love using Classpass to discover new workouts—this way I never get bored. Some of my favorite workouts include AKT, Shock Therapy, SLT, Physique 57 and Core Fusion at Exhale.
7:15 A.M. Skincare and makeup routine time. Generally, my daughter sits next to me for this process. It fascinates her. Over the past few months, while working for Allergan, I have become enamored with the SkinMedica line of products. I am currently using TNS Essential Serum, HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator and TNS Illuminating Eye Cream every day. Over the past couple of years, I have been a regular user of BeautyRX products by Dr. Neal Schultz. Some of my favorites from his line include the Glycolic Pads, the sunblock, and the Triple Vitamin C Serum. I also love the Youth Corridor line of products by Dr. Gerald Imber, especially the RetinUltimate Transforming Gel.
Once finished with my morning skincare, I move on to makeup. Putting on makeup actually relaxes me. I learned so much from the GLAMSQUAD makeup artists, especially Director of Makeup Artistry Kelli J. Bartlett. I love using Hourglass Veil Primer to prep my skin and Bobbi Brown eye primer for my eyelids. Lately I have been using the Urban Decay Naked Palette 3 for eye shadow, Bobbi Brown black eyeliner, Wander Beauty Frame Your Face Micro Brow Pencils in Blonde, Surratt Eyelash Curler, DiorShow Black Mascara, Nars foundation, Nars Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder, Cle de Peau concealer, Nars Blush, Chanel Soleil Bronzer, Kat Von D Contour Palette, Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder, and Super Goop Setting Mist. Then I finish off with a touch of Aquaphor on my lips, and usually a Wander Beauty lipstick, which is so easy to apply, or else I go digging in my basket filled with sooooo many lipstick options in just about every shade and from at least 25 different brands.
7:50 A.M. I put on my clothes and jewelry. I always choose my outfit the night before, so I can be super-duper fast when getting dressed.
8:00 A.M. I walk out the door and take my kids to school. This is my favorite time of the day: peaceful, uninterrupted one-on-one time with each of my children. No phones allowed, just us.
8:35 A.M. On my commute to work, I can finish catching up on my emails. I feel compelled on a daily basis to get my inbox to zero unread messages—this keeps me calm and feeling in control. These days my office is at Hudson Yards, which is such a treat.
9:15 A.M: Every morning when I arrive at the 45th floor at Hudson Yards, I look out the window—the views are insane, literally #pinchme amazing.
9:30 A.M: We have our daily standup meeting with my startup team, during which we can each communicate our individual plans of action for the day.
10 A.M: I am off to the races and typically in back-to-back meetings throughout the rest of the day. And that’s a typical morning for me when I am not traveling (which is actually quite often).
