Hillary Peterson is the Founder and President of True Botanicals, the luxe skincare brand with natural and organic ingredients that has a cult following. Working as a marketer in the Bay Area, Hillary’s worldview changed following a thyroid cancer diagnosis. When she took a closer look at her personal care products, she was horrified to see they all had one thing in common: their ingredients contained toxins. From that point on, Hillary delved into an eight-year study of botanicals, consulting with the world’s leading green chemists and sustainability experts–with the goal of formulating transformative skincare products that wouldn’t compromise peoples’ health or the environment. And, given True Botanicals’ popularity and reviews raving about their products, we’d say she succeeded. Aside from being a beauty industry boss, Hillary lives at the foot of Mt Tamalpais in Mill Valley, California with her husband and youngest child. Curious how the founder spends the hours after her busy workday? Scroll below to find out.
P.M. Most days, I walk to and from work. It is such a great way for me to transition home at the end of the day, walking through the redwoods and listening to the birds. I try to be home by 6:30 so that I can cook dinner with my youngest daughter, who is heading to college in the fall. One of my favorite childhood memories is cooking with my mom, so carrying on the tradition means a lot to me. I usually light a candle that is next to the stove as a reminder that this is a precious and sacred time. Sometimes I feel tired and as soon as I light the candle, I remember that there is really nowhere that I would rather be. Some of our favorite dishes are chipotle tacos, my mom’s Bolognese sauce, and tarragon chicken. We pick vegetables from the garden to complement whatever we are making. They are delicious and the process of picking them is so relaxing. It is my evening meditation. I used to feel a little impatient about how long it takes to, for instance, pick swiss chard but I have realized how great it is for me to slow down in that way.
P.M. In between cooking dinner and sitting down for dinner, my husband and I often try to grab a few minutes on our porch to have a beer or a cocktail together. We sit and talk, stare out at the large redwoods in the distance and truly come home.
P.M. By 8:00, we have finished eating and are likely sitting around the table talking about the day.  Carving out this time has been one of the greatest gifts that we have given our kids and ourselves. It is amazing what comes up and how incredibly enjoyable that time is. The other night I had a conversation with my oldest daughter and three of her guy friends, all in their 20s, about high school and the need for better sex education. They were all so thoughtful and informed. It was encouraging relative to the generation that will soon be in charge.
30 P.M. This is around the time that I sneak away for a bath. I love to bathe in Dead Sea Salts because they are so restorative and relaxing..  Isak Dinesen says that “The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.”.  I agree! Someday, I would love to spend more time at the beach and for now, my Dead Sea bath salt soaks do the trick.
P.M. After my bath, it is time for my evening skincare routine. I usually cleanse my face in the tub with Renew Hydrating Cleanser.  On days that I have worn makeup, I love to use the Pre Cleanse Oil to break it up prior to cleansing. Then before I dry off, I apply Pure Radiance Body Oil. Once I have toweled off, I mist with Renew Nutrient Mist, apply Clear Pure Radiance face oil and layer on Clear Repair Serum with Antioxidant Booster mixed in.  That all takes a few minutes. It is so simple and equally nourishing. On a perfect day, at this point, I am reading in bed.  I love to spend this time reading a great book, researching wellness trends, studying aromatherapy.  The list is endless. I used to spend this time catching up on e-mail but my husband convinced me that I would sleep so much better if I stopped that sooner so now I try to stick to an 8:00 P.M. cut off.
P.M. I do so much better when I get a full 8 hours of sleep and our alarm goes off at 6 A.M. so I try to go to sleep by 9:30 P.M. or 10 P.M. latest. Sticking with this has had such a positive impact on the following day. I am a morning person so if I have work to catch up on, I do it the following morning.  It makes for a much better sleep.
