Elizabeth Brown is the CEO of Viyet, a full-service marketplace to consign as well as buy high-end furniture, accessories, and art online. After building her company for several years, Viyet was recently acquired by Sotheby’s–and Elizabeth is currently leading the charge in integrating their platform with the broader Sotheby’s organization. After the acquisition, Viyet will begin to feature the stunning treasures from Sotheby’s clients, along with fabulous pieces from private homes, showrooms, and dealers that they are known for. Currently, Elizabeth lives in the dreamy Gramercy Park area of NYC with her husband Mike, and 5-month-old son. Wondering how this impressive CEO and mom starts her busy day? Find out below.
6:45 A.M. I wake up whenever our son wakes up, which is around 6:45am these days. He is happy to roll around in his crib for 10-15 minutes while we get his bottle ready and start the coffee. During this time I will do a quick scan of my email to see if anything urgent came through overnight and check the previous day’s sales.
7 A.M. My husband and I trade off feeding Theo and drinking coffee while watching the morning news shows. Once Theo is finished with his breakfast, I will cuddle with him on the sofa or play on his activity mat. I used to be the type of person who hit snooze 2 or 3 times before dragging myself out of bed, but this hour with Theo is now one of my most precious times of the day.
8 A.M. Our nanny arrives and I head upstairs to get ready for the workday. After showering, I apply a vitamin C serum from my dermatologist, but other than that almost all of my skincare products come from the drugstore. As a results-driven girl, I finally realized that fancy skincare doesn’t do much for me other than look pretty in my medicine cabinet. Cera Ve’s Hydrating Cleanser and Moisturizing Cream keeps my skin in better shape than any other lines I have tested over the years. When it comes to makeup on the other hand, there is no product I won’t try. I try to see Jason Ascher, the resident makeup artist at Barney’s, once a season for a product refresh. His latest finds that I am loving are Hourglass’s Arch Brow Sculpting pencil and Armani Crema Nuda Foundation. My old standbys are Chanel Le Correcteur Concealer, Armani Eyes to Kill mascara, and Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Eyeliner.
8:45 A.M. I kiss Theo goodbye before he goes down for his morning nap and pack up my tote for the day. My husband walks me to the subway on his way to work, and we decide our plan for the evening. I hop on the N/R to the Viyet office in Soho and read The New York Times app on my phone while en route.
9 A.M. I stop by Dean & Deluca to grab breakfast on the way into the office. Usually it’s Greek yogurt unless it is a Friday, in which case I might be bad and treat myself to a croissant. Once I get to my desk, I do a closer read of the previous day’s sales and inventory metrics. I check out our new arrivals page to see which items went live that morning and see what kind of offers came in overnight. One of the best parts of Viyet is buyers and sellers can negotiate on price using our Make an Offer feature, so it’s fun to see deals in action. Once I have a good handle on the state of the business, I’ll check my Feedly to see if any new posts are up from my favorite design blogs, do a quick scan of the headlines on Editor at Large, a design industry news site. I also keep an eye out for Dan Primack’s Pro Rata daily newsletter for the latest happenings in the tech world.
9:30 A.M. On to email. I respond to anything that needs my input and archive everything else. I have a phobia about not being able to see the bottom of my inbox, so I try to devote this time to getting my email load to a manageable state before tackling the rest of the day.
10 A.M. First meeting of the day. This could be anything from reviewing a new consignment intake from Sotheby’s to discussing mockups for a new site feature. We are receiving new product every day, so our site is changing constantly and each day holds different priorities for our team. While it’s a fast-paced environment, we are fortunate to have a close-knit team with a great sense of humor that keeps things fun even in the most stressful situations.
