7:45 A.M. My alarm goes off at 7:45, but my real alarm is my dog, who goes off whenever she wants to. Sometimes she’ll let me sleep an extra fifteen minutes and other times I wake up to her standing on my chest, which means we are going outside RIGHT. NOW.
8 A.M. I’ll get out of bed by 8 and take my dog out right away, which usually means I’m in my pajamas with bedhead and sunglasses.
8:15 A.M. Commence the coffee ritual. I need to drink a full cup of coffee (light roast with soy milk) before doing just about anything, so I’ll sit on my couch staring at the wall for awhile. If my girlfriend is over we do this side-by-side. About halfway through the first cup I’ll start checking my texts and social media, by the second cup I’ll check my email and google hangouts and respond to the most important things. I guess this is when my workday starts. I’ll open my calendar app and make sure I know what’s happening that day. Once I’ve read everything I need to, I’ll turn NPR on while I finish the rest of my coffee (I can’t listen to the radio and check email at the same time). Sometimes I’ll eat some granola but not usually.
8:45 A.M. I take the world’s fastest shower. I only wash my hair maybe twice a week, and at night, so this is more like a good morning rinse. I currently have about eight different body washes in my shower thanks to the NYLON beauty awards, so I’ll use one of those and wash my face with Simple’s Kind To Skin face wash.
8:50 A.M. I do my skincare routine right after showering: Avene’s Gentle Toner, followed by either Avene’s sensitive skin moisturizer or AyurMedic’s Clarifying Cream. My skin is super acne-prone and also super-sensitive, so I try to stick to a few gentle things that work rather than a ton of products. I always use an eye cream—currently really into Drunk Elephant. While my skincare is drying/absorbing, I do my hair, which usually involves throwing a bunch of dry shampoo in it and trying to get it to not stick straight up (though sometimes I just go with that!).
9 A.M. Sometimes I pick my outfit out the day before and those are always the best days. When I don’t, I kind of tornado through my closet trying things on and throwing them on the bed until I find something that works.
9:15 A.M. Even though it’s one of the most important parts of my morning, I always leave my makeup until the last minute. Luckily my go-to is very simple: under-eye concealer, mascara, maybe lipstick, and maybe blush if I’m extra pale that day. This takes maximum five minutes, and I’m out the door by 9:20. I take the subway into Manhattan from Brooklyn with my girlfriend, and once we part ways at her stop I’m back on my phone checking email.
10 A.M. I‘m at work by 10 unless I have a breakfast meeting. The first thing I do when I get there is turn my computer on, and while everything is loading I make more coffee. I pull up my gmail, NYLON.com, all of our social platforms, and Google Analytics and kind of look at everything at once, addressing urgent issues and making sure our morning content is strong.
