Lisa Salzer-Wiles is the passionate founder of Lulu Frost, a brand known for its vintage-inspired jewelry. Lisa started the company while still a senior at Dartmouth, after being encouraged by friends and professors to eschew getting a “regular” job in favor of starting her own company. Fourteen years later, this businesswoman has served happy customers around the world. Lisa credits her grandmother, who worked at an estate jewelry store for several years, for both her gem knowledge, and the name of her brand. When this impressive founder isn’t working on her successful company, she enjoys thrilling outdoor activities–Lisa has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and was the youngest girl to climb Mount Rainier at age 14. No big deal. Wondering what this extremely talented boss does to start her busy day? Find out below.
7:40 A.M. It varies from day to day, but I aim to wake up at 7:40am. I’m definitely a snoozer – I sort of like the odd interaction that snoozing a few times can have with my dreams. I get out of bed around 8am and immediately sweep open up my curtains to let in the natural sunshine. I head into the kitchen and drink a full glass of our delicious filtered water from our Berkey Water filtration system, which I’m obsessed with. I try to avoid fluoride and other heavy metals in water, and this removes most of the nasties. It tastes delicious as well!
8 A.M: After brushing my teeth (Tom’s Whitening Toothpaste), I walk over to our couch and sit down for my morning meditation session. My dear friend Jess Van Garsse who founded Amla Meditation taught me Vedic meditation over a year ago, and it is a major game-changer that I would recommend for everyone. I dive into a mystical and fortifying 22 minutes of meditation and then am ready for the day.
8:30 A.M. My sweet hubby makes me a delicious smoothie of whatever goodness we have in the house – usually some sort of combination of walnuts, almond butter, spinach, blueberries, blackberries, banana, chia seeds, ginger and a Vitamin B pill thrown in for good measure (we both love to eat plant-based, so we make sure to get the right nutrients in our diets on the daily). While Marlon is whirring up his smoothie special, I get down to my quick and easy makeup routine.
8:45 A.M.  My makeup routine is super easy, thanks to the ultra-talented makeup artist extraordinaire Cassandra Garcia, who happens to be one of my best buds. Lucky me! Cass is Editorial Makeup Artist at Bobbi Brown, and she’s armed me with all the makeup skills I need to look effortless in almost no time. I begin with Clarins Multi-Active Day Cream, which is the only moisturizer I’ve used for like twenty years. It’s awesome. Then I apply Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit under my eyes with my fingers, followed by a dusting of the power in the kit to set the concealer. I love a sweep of cement shadow on my lids, and I fill in my brows with a mix of the same shade from Bobbi Brown plus a darker grey-brown called saddle.  I then apply a couple coats of Loreal’s Voluminous Mascara in Black Brown, making sure to get down to the root of the lash. I finish by pressing a touch of Bobbi Brown’s Luxe Lip Color in Neutral Rose onto my lips with my finger, finally adding a little bit of CO Bigelow’s Rose Salve to add shine and great scent. A quick spritz of Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom Cologne and I’m ready to get dressed. This whole thing takes no longer than ten to fifteen minutes.
9 A.M.  I traipse over to my closet and toss on whatever is easy – usually a wrinkle-free Issey Miyake Pleats Please dress or a vintage ensemble works wonders for looking effortless and for getting out of the door in a flash. Of course I then begin my favorite morning routine of layering on all of my Lulu Frost essentials. I first put on my trusty gold 1940s-inspired link bracelet, followed by my CODE Numbers lucky rings, in the numbers of my birthday, 11-3-82. I then add my Leo Zodiac ring, representing my rising sign, and of course a pair of great earrings, most often one of our vintage 100-year styles that incorporate elements from many different decades. I finish with my every-day charm necklace, adorned with my favorite antique and vintage charms ranging from the 1890’s to the 1950’s. Once I have my special jewelry on, I feel armed and ready for whatever the day may bring.
9:15 A.M. I open up our living room blinds and let the light in to greet our plants, which we treat like our children. We have a large fiddle leaf ficus tree named Green Boy Jr., a huge cactus that is going crazy sprouting new arms right now in the August sunshine, and these two amazing spider plants that are actually direct descendants of the spider plants that Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner had in their home in Springs, NY. They are appropriately named Jackson and Lee, of course.
9:20 A.M.  I’m out the door with Marlon – he often walks me to work which is a great time to chat and plan out the upcoming day. We walk through Madison Square Park, trying to take in as much nature time as possible in the concrete jungle that is New York City.
9:30 A.M.  I arrive at Lulu Frost just in time for our morning meeting, where the whole team reviews what’s new and coming up that day. Then it’s off to emails and reviewing my to-do list for the day.
9:45 A.M.  I check in with the design and production team to see what’s new and what needs comments/corrections. I love this part of the morning, as it’s the time where we get to see the fruits of some of our labors when we hear back from our production partners. I love each step in the process of creating our jewelry.
10 A.M.  One of the reasons I really love running Lulu Frost is that no two days are alike. Around 10am on any given day, I might be heading into the jewelry district to source stones, or heading out of town entirely on a vintage buying trip. Or I might simply hop on photoshop and design for the day. I love the variety and freedom that running my own company affords me. While it’s certainly hard at times being an entrepreneur, I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
